Attacks in London

Charles Clarke has made a sombre statement to the House describing what he knows at this point about the atrocities in London this morning. It's confirmed that there have been four explosions, although media are reporting up to seven. If people are trying to reach friends or family in London, it seems that the mobile phone networks are jammed at present, with providers like Vodafone and Orange reserving network space for the emergency services — so don't panic if you can't get hold of people straight away.

After the scenes of celebration yesterday after the successful Olympic bid, these events are even harder to bear. This is an appalling crime and there can be nothing that can ever justify or excuse it.
